Someone to aspire to - Yannis Behrakis

"I’m one of the few lucky ones who get paid to do their hobby! I find myself helping younger photographers with my experience."
This is the ultimate selfie taken by Yannis Behrakis. How far have you gone to capture to the perfect snap.
Although Yannis Behrakis was born in Athens, Greece, he considers himself a reporter of the world. For over 20 years he has felt a heavy responsibility to put himself in the middle of the story and consequently, much of the time in extreme danger.

He has covered some of the most war-torn regions on the planet in an effort to make everyone responsible for what's happening. He attempts to be invisible and fall into the background to take photographs, but on occasion the action is consuming. He says the best part about his job is the travel and I think he is just about the luckiest guy in news.

"It’s an amazing job we do by telling people what’s going on."

  1. Andrew, This image of Yannis is heartbreaking. I don't know if you know the story behind this, or not. He took this photo of himself after he and several others were ambushed. During the attack an American reporter, and a cameraman were killed. This must have given him a different perspective on being a photojournalism, to be on the other side instead of photographing it. I'm sure that this experience changed his idea somewhat making him a better photographer. I agree, he definitely is a very lucky guy. It would be so awesome to get to travel and take photos!

    1. It is a heartbreaking story and that is why I found the picture so powerful. I had just finished watching his TED talk when I found this story on another site. People are always taking meaningless selfies like the latest meal at Benja's or this morning's yummy bagel. I was hoping others would check in to the backstory of this event.
